About Jizo: In Zen traditions they are Bodhisattvas, those who are enlightened and make it their path to always be there to aid those who are still struggling to find peace and well-being. There are different Bodhisattvas for different situations and Jizos were designed for the protection of children, women and travelers.

The Artist: Beth Epstein has been sculpting in stone, clay and wood for over 25 years. She also does traditional Asian ink painting (sumi-e) and calligraphy. Beth's meditation practice is the impetus for all her artistic creations. The making and selling of Jizos is Beth's way of promoting loving-kindness across local and inter-national communities.

three jizo

About the process: These ceramic Jizos have been hand carved and each face is unique. Beth uses a raku clay body composed of China clay, talc, fire clay & grog. This clay body tolerates thermal shock so pieces do not shatter or break when exposed to extreme temperatures. She glazes her pieces with either white or turquoise crackle or places a clear glaze over marbleized colored clays (Neriage).

Firing: Pieces are fired in a traditional Japanese style known as Raku. Raku is a technique of firing that ceramics that offers unpredictable and exquisite results.

Smoking: Beth removes each glowing red sculpture with tongs and lets the cold air crackle the glaze. She then places each piece in a saw dust pit with only the heads sticking out. The hot clay ignites the sawdust and the resulting smoke fills the cracks and all non-glazed areas. When all her sculptures stand in the pit, they can resemble the Chin dynasty clay soldiers of Xian! The smoke colors each piece so no two are alike.

The Power of the Way Ð Contemplating the Tao Te Ching for the benefit of oneself, society, and all beings (Paperback) by John Sprague $20.95

John Sprague, a member of the Montague Farm Zendo and student of Sensei Eve Marko and Roshi Bernie Glassman, has recently published a translation and study of the great Chinese philosophical classic, the Tao Te Ching. The book is entitled The Power of the Way Ð Contemplating the Tao Te Ching for the benefit of oneself, society, and all beings, and is now available through the Zen Peacemakers.

The Tao Te Ching is one of the world's greatest spiritual and philosophical works. It is the foundational text of the Chinese Taoist tradition, composed more than 2200 years ago, reputedly by the legendary Lao Tzu. The early Taoist tradition was also one of the influences on the development of Chan/Zen Buddhism in China. Perhaps most importantly, the teachings of Tao Te Ching are extraordinarily relevant in our modern times.

In a world dominated by the use of force, the Tao Te Ching teaches a gentle, non-violent way, of yielding to and harmonizing with the natural flow of life, affirming that this Way is what brings true, sustaining power and goodness. It's a beautiful and evocative text, which can serve as a a valuable companion throughout ones life. Originally the text was written as a manual for leaders Ð teaching them to attune themselves to the natural way and to abandon force as a tool of governing. John's hope is to bring these teachings out to modern day leaders, as well as spiritual seekers.
