Zen Peacemaker Order: Overview: Titles

Meaning of Titles Used in the Zen Peacemaker Order

The Japanese terms "Sensei" and "Roshi" are used differently in various sanghas.

In the Zen Peacemakers Order, Sensei is the title given to those who have received Dharma Transmission by a teacher in a ceremony called "Denbo" (literally, Dharma Transmission.)

Roshi is the title given to those senseis that are deemed by their teacher to be exemplifying the essence of zen, (i.e., the realization and actualization of the interdependence of life and the one body of the Dharma.) This is marked by a Seal of Approval called Inka.

Dharma Holder is a teaching rank of First Level Teacher within the Zen Peacemakers. All Zen Peacemaker Dharma Holders have achieved a maturity in practice and can attest to oneness and the inter-dependence of creation in their experience, understanding, communications and life's work.

A Circle Dharma Holder makes Circle development and practice a focus of their teaching.

A Social Action Dharma Holder makes social action a focus of their teaching.

Novice Priests have ordained in a ceremony called "Tokudo." We are finalizing a Ceremony for Novice Priests to become Full Priests or "Priests." Roshi Enkyo has empowered several Priests in this way. This ceremony includes specific vows regarding the priest role. In most sanghas, the title Priest is given to those who have completed their priestly training and are empowered in a ceremony called "Denkai" (literally, Transmission of the Precepts.)

In the Zen Peacemakers Order, we have created a ceremony for the Empowerment to officiate at a Transmission of Precepts Ceremony and those being so empowered are called Preceptors. Preceptors put extra effort into the study and actualization of the ZP Rule.

Buddha Seat Holders are the vision and spiritual holders for Zen Peacemaker Circles.

Stewards have been empowered to form and lead Zen Peacemaker Circles

The Zen Peacemakers Order is creating various vehicles supporting the integration of Zen practice into our life-whether that life is lived mainly at home raising a family, in the office managing a business, or in other areas. Our mission is to bring dharma practice and teachings into all our life paths and to create new structures and upayas to help us realize that life as it is, in all its manifestations, is our own basic awakened nature.

Currently there are:

  • the Fellowship of Zen Entrepreneurs and
  • the Multi-Faith Peacemaker Fellowship.

Zen Entrepreneurs have been empowered to teach others wishing to study this path.

Multi-Faith Peacemakers have been empowered to teach others wishing to study this path.

Dummy Holders are members of the Order of DisOrder that exemplify the silliness and walking backwards in the cracks that the DisOrder requires.

For consistency we use the following equivalences:

  • Seniors include Roshis, Senseis, Dharma Holders, Full Priests and Priests (those that have received Denkai), Buddha Holders, Multi-Faith Peacemakers, Zen Entrepreneurs and Dummy Holders.
  • Dharma Holders are Zen Instructors.
  • Senseis are Zen Teachers.
  • Roshis are Zen Masters.
